Quick answer: If you pay (or paid) a monthly fee for a packaged bank account that was mis-sold — you couldn’t use the benefits, weren’t told you could have a free account, or were led to believe you had to take it — you can reclaim the fees plus 8% interest. Complain to your bank; if unhappy, escalate free to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Packaged (paid-for) current accounts bundle perks like travel or mobile insurance for a monthly fee. If those perks were useless to you or weren’t explained, the account may have been mis-sold.

What is a packaged bank account reclaim?

A complaint that a paid-for account was mis-sold — for example, you couldn’t benefit from the insurance (age or medical exclusions), you were told you had to take it to get a loan/overdraft/mortgage, or you weren’t told a free account was available. The remedy is a refund of the monthly fees, with 8% interest.

Who can complain & when

Anyone who has paid monthly packaged-account fees and believes the account was mis-sold to them.

Deadlines & key rules

  • Complain to the bank in writing — it has up to 8 weeks to give a final response.
  • If rejected or unsatisfactory, refer to the Financial Ombudsman Service within 6 months of the final response — free.
  • Generally you can reclaim up to 6 years of fees (or six years from when you realised there was a problem).

How to complain — step by step

  1. Gather the account details and roughly when and how you were sold it.
  2. Set out why it was mis-sold (benefits unusable, told it was required, free account not offered).
  3. Ask for a refund of all monthly fees paid, plus 8% interest.
  4. If unhappy with the final response, escalate free to the Financial Ombudsman within 6 months.

No commission, no calls, no chasing — and you keep 100% of any refund or compensation.

Complaint — mis-sold packaged bank account, account ending 4821

Dear Sir or Madam, I am complaining that the paid-for packaged account I have held since June 2014, at £15 per month, was mis-sold to me.

1. The benefits were not properly explained, and I was led to believe I had to take the packaged account to be approved for my overdraft.

2. I could not use key features — the bundled travel insurance excluded me because of my age and a pre-existing condition.

3. I was not told I could hold a free current account instead.

I ask you to refund all the monthly fees I have paid, with 8% interest.

Please treat this as a formal complaint. If I am not satisfied with your final response, I may refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service free of charge.

Yours faithfully, Ian Forbes
